I got distracted by some blogs about what people had in their bags, and I ended up spending about an hour reading what other people carried around with them, particularly in laptop bags. It gave me inspiration, so I got my bag sorted, and this is what’s in it.

Laptop: Samsung Q210. Tiny little laptop, but it’s not underpowered like a netbook, so I can use it for LAN gaming sessions. And work, obviously.

External HDD: 320GB. Mostly full of installers, disc images and so on. It’s handy to have for quick repairs when out and about.

12-in-1 Screwdriver: Has everything a young geek could ever need, to get into the latest gadget.

Notebook and Pens: Sometimes you need something that doesn’t need batteries to make a quick note. That’d be this.

Camera: Finepix Z10. Perfect for snapping quick pictures, and decent enough quality to take memorable photos and video as well.

Blank Discs: Normally a couple of blank CD-Rs and DVD-DL discs. Rarely get used thanks to USB storage, but handy to have when I do need them.

USB Dongles: A nice selection of USB dongles to cover me for anything I may need to do on someone elses computer. Bluetooth, Micro-SD, DOS Boot.

Nintendo DS Lite: iPhones are great, but the DS has games pretty much nailed down. Lots of decent games to play, and everybody loves Pokemon.

iPod Cable: Just a cheap knock off one I got off eBay for £1, but works a treat for impromptu charging situations.

Bluetooth Mouse: Always helpful if you need more precision than a touchpad can provide, and it’s tiny, so you might as well.

Sharpie: Always handy to have, I prefer black, but sometimes I mix it up with red or green.

Electronic Cigarette: Only in there so it’s always with me in case needed, but it is USB chargeable, so that counts, right?

Smart Playlists: Getting Organised

I’ve been trying to whip my iTunes library into shape for months now, and finally decided I needed to break down the job into manageable chunks. Using smart playlists I did just that and here’s how.

Missing Info
First things first I needed to sort out any tracks that were missing key info from their tags. My idea of key info is Title, Artist, Album or Album Artist. Genre is always lost on me, but if you like it then include that too.

Shorties
Songs shorter than 1 minute are crappy interludes or silent tracks 90% of the time. Have it only apply to unrated songs so you don’t include short songs you DO like.

No Rating
This is the bread and butter of my organisation. It’s simply any unrated track, chosen at random, up to a maximum of 100. I turned off live updating to prevent the song stopping as soon as you rate it. Remember: 1 star means delete!

To Delete
Following on from the ratings above, this just takes everything rated 1 star and pops it all in one place, ready to be purged from your library forever.
